Alpha Symbol in Greek Alphabet
Alpha (uppercase Α; lowercase α) is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet is the ancestor of modern languages and is derived from the Phoenician alphabet. Like the other Greek letters, alpha is commonly used in chemistry, engineering, physics, mathematics, and science. Etymologically, alpha came from aleph (the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet), meaning "ox" in Phoenician. The uppercase letter alpha is A and the lowercase letter alpha is α. In the Greek numeral system, the letter was taken as the symbol of 1 (one). It presents the first/the beginning. In ancient Greek, alpha was pronounced either short or long "a". (Ᾱᾱ, Ᾰᾰ)
Alpha and Omega are used as a symbol in Christianity. It is declared that "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End" in the Book of Revelation. Since Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, this phrase is interpreted to mean that God includes all that can be. The term alpha is also used to indicate the dominant male in a group of animals. This term started to use to define dominant, protective, leadership-type men since the 1990s too. In addition, the alpha female stands for indicating the dominant female in a pack of animals. It is also used to define strong, confident women as "alphette" (alpha + -ette). There is another use of "Alpha" in finance such as one of the key coefficients in the capital asset pricing model (CAPM). On the other hand, the lowercase Alpha (α) is mostly used to indicate Alpha particles in nuclear physics.
