Mu Symbol in Greek Alphabet
Mu (uppercase Μ, lowercase μ) is the 12th letter of the Greek alphabet. It was taken as the symbol of 40 in the Greek number system. The letter came from the Phoenician letter mem (or mēm), which was simplified from the Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for water. The lowercase symbol is commonly used in academic fields such as math, physics, pharmacology, engineering, computer science, biology, chemistry etc. The capital Mu (M) is just like the Latin M.
The lowercase Mu (μ) is used to represent the population mean in statistics, magnetic permeability, coefficient of friction, micron (micrometer), elementary particles, linear density, and muon in physics. "μ" is also used to denote a measure as well as integrating factor, Möbius function, minimalization, and Ramanujan–Soldner constant in math. There are other uses of this letter in orbital mechanics, music (as Mu major chord), and linguistics. Because the uppercase Mu (M) is identical to Latin M, it is not used today. In addition, there is a series of compact film and digital cameras called The Olympus µ which is introduced by Japanese manufacturer Olympus. These series include Olympus μ 410, Olympus μ 700, Olympus μ 725 SW, Olympus μ 760, Olympus μ 830, Olympus μ 850 SW, and Olympus μ 1030 SW.
