Zeta Symbol in Greek Alphabet
Zeta (uppercase Ζ, lowercase ζ) is the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet. In the Greek numeral system, it has the value of seven. The original letter arose from the Phoenician letter zayin and it meant weapon. But the Greeks renamed the Phoenician letter as Zeta. In modern pronunciation, it sounds like "z" as in the word "zoom". You can see the usage of the lowercase zeta in mathematics, fluid and polymer dynamics.
Because the uppercase zeta Ζ is alike to the Latin letter Z, we don't use it much today. On the other hand, the lowercase zeta (ζ) is used to denote the Riemann zeta function in math, relative vorticity in the ocean and atmosphere, and many other areas such as in engineering dynamics, quantum chemistry, physics, industrial materials technology, etc. Tropical Storm Zeta, a tropical storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, takes its name after the Greek letter.
